Hello All,

I've been notified by a public safety officer that there seems to be some
confusion among you as to what your closing responsibilities are. Here is some
clarification of what should happen:

-At approximately 11:50 an officer should enter to start clearing the building.
Officers will sometimes be delayed if they have to respond to emergency calls.
The exit door is locked a few minutes before midnight to prevent patrons from
entering. You are at the desk anyway, and can see if someone desperately needs
something in those final closing minutes. Some officers will turn off the
lights before clearing the floors to alert patrons that the building is
closing. This is fine, as it may take patrons another 10 minutes to gather up
their belongings and exit the building. The expectation is that patrons will be
out of the building at midnight, closing does not begin at midnight.

-In the 15 minutes before closing, you should be shutting down the reference
computers and the Reserves computer. The last things you want to do are lock
the headphone cabinet and shut off the main circ computer. You save these
tasks for last in case patrons have items to return on their way out of the
building.

-YOU MUST STAY AT THE DESK UNTIL THE OFFICER TELLS YOU IT IS OK TO LEAVE!!!
Patrons coming down from the 2nd and 3rd floors may bring items they want to
check out. If you are not at the desk and the officer is still upstairs,
patrons may just walk through the security gate without a care. You will be
paid for any time worked after midnight. Just remember to log it on your time
card on the following day, 12am - 12:XXam.

Please contact me if you have any questions or comments about anything written
in this email.
