Hello everyone,

This is to address undesirable behaviors at the circulation desk.
Chris and I have noticed some, but not all, so consider this a
general reminder of what not to do. What follows is a portion of a
memo circulated by my predecessor, Emily , last April. Please talk
to me or Chris if any of this is unclear.

* It is never appropriate to wear headphones while working at the
circulation desk. However,
headphones may be worn while shelving.
* Please do not put your feet on top of the desk.
* Eating at the desk is discouraged. If you must do so (i.e., your
shift spans a normal meal time), please be neat and discreet with
your food. Do not place food on the desk.
* Please be careful with beverages at the desk (i.e.: keep them away
from terminals, keyboards, and library materials!).
* It is fine to read, study, etc. during slow times, but always make
sure that patrons are your first priority. Don't bury yourself in
your work so deeply that you seem unapproachable.
* Brief personal (and telephone) conversations are fine, but more
heavy-duty socializing and lengthy phone calls are not.
* Please do not leave the desk unattended if you are the sole person
on duty (i.e., after 10 pm and on weekends). If you need a brief
bathroom break, that is unavoidable. But smoke breaks, trips to the
store, etc. should wait until someone else (another circ worker or a
staff person) is available to cover the desk.
