"Dear Hampshire Blacksmiths,
I am headed to an Artist Blacksmith festival in Ivano-Frankivsk,
Ukraine this May, and I want to ask for your help. There are two big,
international projects at this festival, both involving forgework of
some kind.
Here's the link to the information on the festival:
http://www.kf-arma.com.ua/ua/news/206/Iv-FR%202009
The first one is decorating a giant picture frame, the collaborative
project of this festival. Each festival has a collaborative project,
and this year's theme is "In Frames of Traditions". The smiths from
Ivano-Frankivsk would like all the attendees to find an old
blacksmithing object, like door handles, bells, nails, horseshoes,
spades, spears, hammers, tongs, etc., from their home country to
attach to the frame. They ask that we take this piece and embellish
it with our own artistic design as well, so it is a piece of art
across multiple generations and has some of our personality in it as
well as that of the smiths of yore. It's a blacksmith sculpture in
honor of blacksmiths, and sounds really exciting.
So, I would really love to carry an object or two that was
artistically embellished by the Hampshire Blacksmiths, because the
forge at Hampshire is what brought me to this point. I want to
represent you in some way. If you have something you want to do, let
me know!
The second project is a leaf for Australia. Information can be found
here: http://www.treeproject.abavic.org.au/
Basically, the Australian smiths are 'planting' a metal gumtree as a
memorial for the victims of the fires this past winter. They're
asking smiths from all around the world to forge stainless steel or
copper leaves and gumnuts for the tree as an international symbol of
blacksmith unity. Pretty cool! I would love to bring a few leaves
from Hampshire Blacksmiths!
Here's some links with instructions on forging the leaves:

If this year is fun and goes well (and I think it will) next year I
would love for more Hampshire folks to come to this festival! (I'm
sure you could come this year if you wanted -- just e-mail me if you
think it's possible...)
Best!
Jacob"
