Hey everyone,

Those of you who are in one of Ruth's classes already know this, but
the Hampshire College ASL Collective will be hosting a screening of
Through Deaf Eyes, a documentary on the history of the Deaf community in
America. It's a very well-made film on a wicked interesting topic, and
we will have Diane Garey, one of the filmmakers, present for a
discussion following the screening.

 From PBS.org:

"THROUGH DEAF EYES is a documentary that explores 200 years of Deaf life
in America. The film includes interviews with prominent members of the
Deaf community, including actress Marlee Matlin and Gallaudet University
president emeritus I. King Jordan.

Interwoven throughout the film are six short documentaries produced by
Deaf media artists and filmmakers. Poignant, sometimes humorous, these
commissioned stories bring a personalized sense of Deaf life in America
to the film. Through first person accounts and the film as a whole,
THROUGH DEAF EYES tells the story of conflicts, prejudice and
affirmation that ultimately reaches the heart of what it means to be
human."

WHERE: the West Lecture Hall in FPH
WHEN: Friday, Nov 2 at 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (2-hour screening followed by
1-hour discussion)

Hope to see you there!
