Subject: ASL at UMass
Hi everyone,
I started the UMass ASL Lunch almost 2 years ago, hoping that Deaf and
hearing students would meet and socialize. A number of students came
regularly from time to time but those who came the most often were from
off-campus. The new weekly Northampton group will work better for them and
hopefully some UMass people will check that out too.
So I've decided to stop doing the UMass ASL Lunches. I'm feeling a bit
overwhelmed and Michele (our other "regular") will be very busy this
semester. We'd still love to see ASL and Deaf Culture at the University and
we wonder if students should be the ones to lead that effort. (Perhaps a
Librarian and a Professor aren't the best people to attract student
interest? Ouch!) ;-) But we're ready to support anything the students
want to do in any way that we can.
So if someone would like to get campus signers together, or work toward
getting ASL and Deaf Culture recognized academically on campus, I'd be happy
to help connect you with each other, help advertise, or not.
I'm sorry to drop this group, I worked hard to get it going and I hate to
leave those of you who have most recently shown interest.
I've really enjoyed meeting everyone and I hope to soon hear that ASL is
still alive and well at UMass.
Thanks,
Lorraine
