Tomorrow at 6:30pm at Hampshire College, Mark Blumberg will present his Div.
3 on "The Effect of Music on Users of Cochlear Implants." Also tomorrow, is
Silent Pizza Night at HCC (which is also fun- information listed at the
bottom of this email). Silent Pizza Night is a monthly happening, whereas
Mark's presentation is only once so I highly recommend that choice if you

Div III April 21 - Presentation by Mark Blumberg & Music Lost and Found: A
Personal Account by musician Richard Reed, April 21, 6:30 p.m., ELH

Blumberg's Division III is titled, "The Effect of Music on Users of Cochlear
Implants." He will present his research and findings, and then he will
introduce Richard Reed, a notable cochlear implant user and keyboard player.
Blumberg's work focuses on music rehabilitation for implantees, and Richard
Reed is both a perfect example of this and a wonderful storyteller. He will
add a significant, human understanding to Blumberg's research, and his
talks, which he accompanies on his own keyboard, are engaging even to those
who are not experts in hearing loss and cochlear implants.

Richard Reed also brings music rehabilitation research full circle in
regards to the way in which Blumberg's research approaches 'Culture, Brain
and Development.' The study demonstrates how music can serve as a tool to
guide development in the adult brain, and Reed's talk brings the results of
that training to a musical reality.

Background on Reed: In the early 1990's, Richard Reed was a professional
keyboard player, and had played with a number of well known Rock & Roll and
Blues groups including Junior Walker and the All Stars, Roomful of Blues,
Ronnie Earle, and Otis Rush. Following administration of ototoxic
antibiotics, however, he became profoundly deaf, and was forced to abandon
his musical career. Hearing aids provided little assistance, so, in 2002, he
decided to have a cochlear implant. At first, he found music through the
implant very disappointing, and was reconciled to having to face life with
greatly enhanced speech understanding, but no appreciable improvement in
music enjoyment. Over time, however, music has become more and more
accessible, and he is once again performing live with a number of small
groups.

Reed will give a presentation telling of his life in music, pre- and
post-implant. In this presentation, he will tell of his journey back to a
musical life, and will "illustrate" his story with musical extracts on the
keyboard. Richard is a very talented speaker and performer, and his personal
insights into music and cochlear implants should be of general interest as
well as of particular interest to anyone working in this area.

This event is on Friday, April 21st, at 6:30 p.m., in Franklin Patterson
Hall East Lecture Hall.

It is organized by: Division III student Mark Blumberg, School of Cognitive
Science, and FPR-Hampshire College Program in Culture, Brain, and
Development
