Subject: [Socjus-teach] opportunity for students at Amherst Regional High
School
Dear Adults who work with Amherst High School Youth.
My name is Joanna Kent Katz and I will be teaching a
class at ARHS as a practicum in the Social Justice
Education Program at Umass.
The class is called Theater of Liberation. Its a
Theater class that is geared towards students who want
to use their creativity to explore issues of
oppression and liberation and privilege and personal
power. We will use theater games and exercises as well
as dialogue sessions to increase understanding and
awareness of the many ways that young people can
create change in community. This class is going to be
an intense and amazing experience and its an enormous
honor for me to be facilitating this process.
I am writing because I want to make sure that youth
who are already involved in arts education and
political arts in the area know about this class as an
option for either the winter trimester or spring
trimester. The class will be held three days a week:
monday, wednesday, and thursday during E period (last
period of the day). The class is open specifically to
10th, 11th, and 12th graders but if you feel that a
9th grader is ready for this then I would love to have
them.
It is very important to me that this class be made
available to all students, not just those already
invovled in theater. This class is about liberation
and connection and empowerment and, thus, I want to
involve students of all experiences and identities. It
is also very important for me to be aware of the
potential for tokenization of students of color and
students with other identities that have been
traditionally marginalized in settings such as this
one. So, I am calling on other mentors in the
community to assist my recruitment efforts.
Please specifically encourage youth of color,
immigrant students, queer and trans students, and
students with different abilities to consider signing
up.
The process for signing up begins by students talking
to Mr. Bechtold, the theater teacher. He will talk to
them about changing their schedules with their school
counselor.
Please let your students know about this ASAP. The
time to sign up begins right now and space in the
class is limited.

continuing to support youth in finding opportunities
where they are supported in challenging themselves.
