Please note that the article that ran in the Springfield = Republican on Sunday was excellent, except for the fact that it gave the = wrong day for when the meeting will take place. Please mark your = calendars and let your friends know. The meeting WILL take place on = WEDNESDAY EVENING, as originally reported. It will begin with a free showing of the award-winning documentary film = by Ziad Hamzeh, The Letter - An American Town and the "Somali Invasion". = The Letter focuses on how the city of Lewiston, Maine suddenly found = itself in the national spotlight when issues of race and immigration = came to a boil after the city's mayor wrote a letter to the leaders of = the local Somali community asking them to discourage further Somali = immigration. The film follows the actions of the citizens of Lewiston = and those of the outsiders who were drawn to the controversy. It = culminates with a day marked by demonstration and counter demonstration. = =20 Following the screening of the film, there will be a group discussion = about how the issues and concerns that are raised in the film can = resonate through any small community and how citizens and community = groups in Hampshire, Hampden and Franklin Counties can work together to = address these issues. We hope that you will be able to attend and take = part in this important process. Refreshments will be served. The Letter was voted the Best Documentary at the Boston International = Film Festival, nominated for Best Documentary at the 2004 Pan-African = Film Festival, and chosen to be the opening night film at the 2003 = Amnesty International Film Festival and the 2004 World Premier Art Film = Festival.=20 The event will be jointly sponsored by HAP, Incorporated and the = Massachusetts Fair Housing Center, under a grant from the Fair Housing = Initiatives Program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban = Development (HUD).
