<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman">The Chicano Caucus and La Causa of Amherst College cordially invite you to attend the First Five College Dialogue between National-Community Poets and Academics on Friday December 9, 2005.<SPAN style="LAYOUT-GRID-MODE: line"> </SPAN><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal">The lecture will take place at Pruyne Lecture Hall (Fayerweather 115) <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Amherst</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> at 6pm on Friday December 9, 2005.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN></B>The discussion is part of the 8<SUP>th</SUP> Annual Voices for the Voiceless <SPAN style="LAYOUT-GRID-MODE: line">National Diaspora Poetry & Spoken Word Concert
and Festival.</SPAN><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>The discussion will include a panel of poets including poetry elders Jose Montoya (veteran Chicano poet and visual artist and currently the Poet Laureate of Sacramento), Jesus Tato Laviera (Afro-Puerto Rican poet and vanguard of Nuyorican literature), Roberto Vargas (a celebrated Nicaraguan poet and statesman), and Louis Reyes Rivera (Afro-Puerto Rican poet and scholar raised in Brooklyn and pioneer of Nuyorican poetry and publishing). Representing the new generation of poets and activists will be Shaggy Flores (<SPAN style="LAYOUT-GRID-MODE: line">Nuyo-Massarican poet from <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Springfield</st1:place></st1:City>)</SPAN>, and Tonia Maria Mathews (Afo-American poet from DC).<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>The poets will be discussing Latino and African Diaspora Studies and
their relationship to the Spoken Word Tradition. <SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Please join us, there will be a reception following the discussion in Evan Nabrit’s 06E art gallery located in Fayerweather Hall with food and refreshments. <SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face="Times New Roman"><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">In addition to the panel there will be a Spoken Word Concert <SPAN style="LAYOUT-GRID-MODE: line">that will take place on </SPAN>Saturday December 10, 2005 from 6:45 pm until 10:45 p.m. in the Frontroom of the <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Keefe</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Campus</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Center</st1:PlaceType> at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Amherst</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. </SPAN></B><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; LAYOUT-GRID-MODE: line">Voices for the Voiceless will bring together 12 established national poets on one stage, for an evening of literary and cultural entertainment. </SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">A highlight of the evening will be
book signings, a free Mexican food buffet courtesy of La Veracruzana, an appearance by VDJ of Springfield, and book and album releases.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>It is our intention through this project <SPAN style="LAYOUT-GRID-MODE: line">to expose the five-college and <st1:place w:st="on">New England</st1:place> area to the diversity, complexity, and power of the Latino, African-American, and Asian-American National poetry scene.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN></SPAN>The twelve poets who will read from their work include Giles Lung-Hwa Li, Louis Reyes Rivera, Jesus Tato Laviera, Jose Montoya, Roberto Vargas, Crystal Senter-Brown, Jahipster, Maurice “Soulfighter” Taylor, Shaggy Flores, Robert Karimi, Mahogany Brown, and Truth Thomas. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT face="Times New Roman"><I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">This year “Voices for the Voiceless” will honor Jose Montoya, (founder of the Royal Chicano Air Force and the first Latino Poet Laureate of Sacrementot), Jesus Tato La Viera (a pioneer in Nuyorican literature), and Roberto Vargas (A celebrated Nicaraguan poet, community organizer, activist, and diplomat) as the recipients of the Louis Reyes Rivera Lifetime Achievement Award.</SPAN></I><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt"><o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>
