NAACP SPRINGFIELD BRANCH PUBLIC FORUM:
CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES CURRENTLY AFFECTING OUR COMMUNITY

TUESDAY, APRIL 6, 2010

7:00 to 8:30pm
MASS CAREER DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE
140 WILBRAHAM AVE., SPRINGFIELD

The Springfield Branch of the NAACP and the Civil Rights Clinical Project of
the Department of Legal Studies, UMass Amherst, are coordinating this public
forum to assist Springfield residents who believe they have been
discriminated against.

The changing landscape of civil rights challenges nationally and in
Massachusetts, including the current foreclosure crisis, necessitates new
and innovative approaches to enforcement of civil rights protections. With
this collaboration, the NAACP Springfield Branch and the Civil Rights
Project will assist people in need of legal redress and will support
research on current civil rights issues affecting the region.

The Current Civil Rights Struggle

Civil rights protections have come under attack in recent years. The current
predatory lending and housing crises, and their negative effect on many
other forms of discrimination, have further degraded the lives of many
people. These victims of injustice have also lost ground as an increasingly
coded discourse distracts attention from the empirical evidence of racial
segregation and other forms of discrimination in contemporary society. The
Civil Rights Clinical Project provides students with an understanding of the
legal and historical background of modern civil rights protections, and
explores the nature and influence of contemporary public debate and threats
to civil rights in the United States.
