Subject: Book/article discussion in preparation for Tim Wise on March 25

(1) Tell your friends! Author and activist Tim Wise, who has published, spoken, and acted extensively on the issue of white privilege, is going to be speaking at Keene State College and SIT on Wednesday, March 25. I *think* he's going to be at Keene State at 3 PM (don't quote me; I didn't write it down) but I *know* he's going to be at SIT at 6:30. Hope to see you all there. (Chris or Mikaela or anyone, pls correct me on the KSC time if I'm wrong.)

(2) A central topic of Tim's talk will be about his book *Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and Denial in the age of Obama,* or, more accurately, what the book is about. From Tim's website:

"Contrary to popular perception, Obama's victory says little about racism as a larger institutional phenomenon, and may well make the fight against racism more difficult than ever, by reinforcing longstanding white denial, reinforcing the myth of meritocracy that has long served as a justification for profound racial disparities, and by creating a new and limiting archetype of acceptable blackness, which although met by those like Obama, would erect higher obstacles than ever in the path of non-Obama-like persons of color."

We invite you to join the Deconstructing White Privilege group this coming Tuesday, March 17, to discuss Tim's latest book, in preparation for his talks on March 25. If you don't have the time/money/ability to get the (short!) book before then, here are a couple of articles Tim has posted on his blog about the same subject:

*In Search of Post-Racial America*: http://www.redroom.com/blog/tim-wise/in-search-post-racial-america

*Color-Blind, Power Oblivious: Eric Holder and the Whitewashing of Racism*: http://www.redroom.com/blog/tim-wise/color-blind-power-oblivious-eric-holder-and-whitewashing-racism

See you at ALANA on March 17 at 7 PM!

Hugs&Justice,
Mel
