Insider Update

Dear Friends,

President Obama sounded sobering notes in his inaugural address, but
throughout the weekend's celebrations, his campaign themes of 'hope' and
'change' were evident-showing that they aren't just slogans, but
commitments.

If you watched the inaugural coverage on cable, you would also have been
reminded of 'hope' and 'change' through our new Employee Free Choice Act
ads. Missed it because you were down at the Capitol or the Mall? They will
be running for another 10 days, so there is still a good chance to catch
them, or you can view them here

Here are a few other things you shouldn't miss if you care about workers'
rights and the Employee Free Choice Act!

Thanks for all you do,
MB

1. Making the Economic Case for the Employee Free Choice Act
Don't be fooled by opposition claims that the Employee Free Choice Act will
hurt the economy! Our research team, along with the Economic Policy
Institute, the Center for Economic and Policy Research, and Prof. Harley
Shaiken, has produced a paper making the economic case for the Employee Free
Choice Act. It shows that the decline in workers' ability to organize and
bargain collectively has been an important factor in the cause of the
current economic crisis-and that reversing this decline is necessary to
ensure any economic recovery is broadly shared. Download
<http://www.americanrightsatwork.org/dmdocuments/ARAWReports/araw_efca_ensur
ing_the_economy_works_for_everyone_again.pdf> it here (PDF).

This week in Rolling Stone, Paul
<http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/25456948/what_obama_must_do>
Krugman joined many others in sharing this analysis. While providing a
prescription for what the new administration needs to do in order to fix the
economy, he recommends that workers' ability to organize and bargain
collectively be strengthened if we hope to see a rebuilding of the middle
class.

2. Exposing Richard Berman
Richard Berman never met a worker, consumer safety, or health promotion
effort he wouldn't oppose-as long as the price was right. A front man for
business and industry, he is often presented as an 'expert.' A new website
from the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington,
www.bermanexposed.org <http://www.bermanexposed.org/> , reveals how empty
that is. Check it out-if he hasn't already attacked your cause, he probably
will!

3. Don't Miss this Week's Nation
A great comment by Nan Aron <http://www.thenation.com/doc/20090126/aron/>
of Alliance for Justice appears in the January 26, 2009, editon of The
Nation. She reminds us of the progressive principles that keep us all
working together.

4. Don't Miss these New Books
Dean Baker, a co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research,
has a new book: Plunder and Blunder: The Rise and Fall of the Bubble
Economy. He is holding a book-signing at Busboys and Poets on January 27,
2009. RSVP
<http://www.cepr.net/index.php/events/events/book-signing-and-discussion-at-
busboys-and-poets/> here. And Mike Lux's first book, The Progressive
Revolution: How the Best in America Came to Be, is now available
<http://theprogressiverevolution.com/buy/> . Dean and Mike are good friends
of workers and I hope you will join us in supporting them!
