Victory on Expansion of State Childrens Health Insurance Program:

Our calls into Senator Kerry's office were key to our success!	Both
the House and Senate passed an expanded version of SCHIP that removes
the 5 year waiting period for immigrant children and pregnant women! 
An additional 4 million children will now have access to health care
as of April 1!	Senator Kerry remains a staunch supporter of all
children having access to health care. 

Urgent Action Needed by Monday Evening on Job Creation:

Background:

The Economic Stimulus package (American Recovery nad Reinvestment Act)
is projected to create 3 -4 million urgently needed jobs.  But will
these jobs get to low income families and distressed communities? Only
if we take action now and demand that our politicians stand up for the
people who are hurting the most -- low-income people, people of color,
youth, and women - not just big business. We need to get them to pass
an amendment called "the Employment of Targeted Workers". This
amendment will set aside 15% of all jobs to low-income people - that
equals over 400,000 jobs!

The only way to get this amendment passed is through a "Managers
Amendment" when the Stimulus bill gets to the Senate floor, probably
on Tuesday of next week.  We can make a difference in making this
happen!

Urgent Action Needed:

We need Senator Kennedy to be our Champion and make this amendment his
# 1 priority.	

Call Senator Kennedy's office by the evening of Monday, February 2.

Sample Message to Senator Kennedy:

Thank you for fighting for the economic stimulus bill and for working
people.  But we need Senator Kennedy to champion a Manager's Amendment
to make sure that the stimulus provides opportunities for low income
workers to have living wages and to help distressed communities like 
mine (insert your city/town).  Please champion a Managers Amendment
for the "Employment of Targeted Workers".  And please speak to your
colleagues in the Senate leadership and urge them to include this in a
Manager's Amendment on the Senate Floor. Stand up for ADP leaders like
Kirk Sanchez, a youth who is out of school and out of work and Beth
Murphy a single mom who just lost her minimum wage job last week (or
tell your story).

Report on E-Verify:

Great work getting calls into Congressman Olver's office,
unfortunately E-verify was included in the final House version of the
Economic Stimulus Bill.  E-verify is not in the current version of the
Senate bill, but we expect Republicans will use this as an
anti-immigrant wedge to get an amendment on the floor next week.  It
is crucial that we keep it out of the Senate version so that when the
Economic stimulus bill goes to the joint House and Senate Conference
Committee to get finalized we can pressure the House to take it out. 

Next Steps on E-Verify:  We will keep track of the Senate debate next
week.  Then we may need to get calls into the House Conference
committee in the coming weeks.
