Intersection V: Creative UpRising(s) April 4-6, 2008
New WORLD Theater, Fine Arts Center Univ. of MA Amherst
Intersection is our biennial conference and festival examining new work
practices by artists of color and showcasing multidisciplinary theater pieces on
the cutting edge of new aesthetics. In April 2006 we brought together more than
250 people from around the country to see new work and discuss trends in
theater, engage in networking and community.
This year's theme, Creative UpRising(s), takes a global look at art and
activism, emerging aesthetics, and the role of performance in cultural
organizing. Artists and activists from across the U.S and around the globe will
converge here in Amherst the weekend of April 4-6.
PRE-CONFERENCE: The Rise of an Arab-American Cultural Movement
A gathering of Arab-American artists, cultural leaders, organizers and allies,
exploring the aesthetics, approaches and impact of this growing movement.
PERFORMANCES: (all performances take place in Bowker Auditorium and are open to
generasl public as well as conference attendees)
Friday, April 4 at 8 pm - The Love in Revolution ~ New WORLD Theaters youth
troupe, Project 2050, looks at global and personal revolutions in a high-energy
hip-hop performance blending spoken word, breaking, stepping and video
storytelling.
Saturday, April 5 at 2 pm - Community/One ~ A showcase of excerpts by
activist/artists taking on important contemporary issues in a variety of
aesthetics, from spoken word to interview theater. Host Kristina Wong introduces
work excerpts by DLo (Ramble-ations), Lenelle Moïse (Womb-Words, Thirsting),
Jerry Quickley (Un-Embedded) and Jose Torres Tama (Cone of Uncertainty).
Saturday, April 6 at 8 pm breaking letter (s) ~ Celebrated poet/activist
Suheir Hammad explores stories of dislocation from Palestine to New Orleans,
seeking compassionate connections between peoples with histories of
displacement. A collaboration of solo performance and multimedia created with
video artist Waleed Zaiter.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: The theater of politics and the politics of theater
Ngugi wa Miiri, Kenyan-born founder of ZACT, the Zimbabwe Association of
Community Theatre.
Jesusa Rodriguez, prominent Mexican director, performance artist and political
activist
Rhodessa Jones, acclaimed performer, teacher, writer, organizer. Co-director of
San Franciscos Cultural Odyssey Performance Company.
CONFERENCE TRACK HIGHLIGHTS
Artist Workshops, Panels, Case Studies & Dialogues including:
ARTISTIC PRAXIS Artist Workshops by Djola Branner (writing), Roger
Bonair-Agard (poetry), Millicent Johnnie (dance), and Mildred Ruiz (voice)
Open Studio with renowned Chicana playwright Cherrie Moraga and director Dora
Arreola, at work with the cast of The Hungry Woman, an apocalyptic blending of
Greek and Mexican myths in this contemporary re-telling of the Medea tale.
Panel on Hip Hop Histories & Resistance brings artists and scholars together,
including Jeff Chang, Millicent Johnnie and Baba Israel, to explore Hip Hops
genesis, and its influence as a worldwide voice of resistance.
>From Activist Art to Cultural Organizing
In collaboration with the Center for Civic Participations Art & Democracy
Project, this series of artist-activist dialogues provides an opportunity to
connect to an on-going national conversation on Cultural Organizing what it
is, how it works, whos doing it, and how to get involved. Also featuring
Voices from the Battlefront of Cultural Equity, case studies on Creating with
Refugee Communities, and artist report-backs from the Social Forums, local,
national and global.
Youth Aesthetics, Action & Leadership
Youth Speaks-San Francisco and New WORLD Theaters Project 2050 co-host a series
of sessions for young artists, activists, educators and leaders, including a
Youth Dialogue Arts Activism and the Media.
Also featuring LIVE MUSIC performances, & Intersections infamous & fabulous
late-night OPEN MIC
