Tuesday, March 4
7 p.m., Talk by Deepa Fernandes, award-winning journalist and radio host,
about her book, Targeted: Homeland Security and the Business of
Immigration-- an historical and political analysis that takes the reader on
a harrowing journey inside the new American immigrant experience, a journey
marked by militarized border zones, racist profiling, criminalization,
detention, and deportation. Wilson Savignano Auditorium B&C, Westfield State
College; part of the college's Guest Lecture Series and Month Celebrating

7:30-9 a.m., International Women's Day Breakfast; Blue Heron Restaurant, 112
North Main Street, Sunderland. No charge, but attendees will be asked for
donations to support the programs of NELCWIT (New England Learning Center
for Women in Transition). Featured speakers: Yoko Kato, whose daughter and
grandchild were victims of a domestic violence homicide, known for her
efforts to end domestic violence in New England and her native Japan; and
the Reverend Dr. Andrea Ayvazian, Senior Minister of the Haydenville
Congregational Church and former Dean of Religious Life at Mount Holyoke

11 a.m, Talk by Ruth Trujillo, Executive Director of the Greensboro Justice
Fund, entitled "Crossing Borders: Realities of Immigrant Families in the
United States." Greenfield Community College, Social Sciences Studio East

and literature about social, political, health, and academic support.

11 a.m.-Noon, Greenfield Weekly Peace Vigil, Greenfield Town Common.
Focusing this week on "Women Say NO to War! US Out of Iraq and Afghanistan;
No War on Iran". Sponsored by the Greenfield Weekly Peace Vigil, Coalition
for Women's Lives, CODE PINK, and the Socialist Party/Western Mass Local.

11 a.m.to 1 p.m., Valley Women's Martial Arts Annual International Women's
Day Open House and Community Event, 1 Cottage Street, Easthampton. This
free, two-hour event for women, men, teens, and children will feature
activities and fun, with a focus on personal empowerment and self-defense.
Exercises and movement will be geared to al levels of ability and

Noon-1 p.m., Amherst Weekly Peace Vigil, Amherst Town Common. Now in its
29th year, the vigil speaks out for women's rights as it continues to
advocate for an end to the arms race, an end to nuclear weapons at home and

Tuesday, March 11
4:00 p.m., Panel Discussion on Transfeminism, Dwight Hall 101, Mount Holyoke
College. In contemporary society, there exists an explosion of theories and
practices around a variety of trans identities such as transgender,
transgenre, transpecies, transsexual, and transvestite. This panel
investigates some of the nuances of these theories and practices and the
relationship of a broad spectrum of trans identities to feminist and women's
issues. Confirmed speakers include Jami Weinstein, Mount Holyoke College;
Myra Hird, Queen's University; Elena Glasberg, Princeton University; and
Mitch Boucher, University of Massachusetts Amherst. Sponsored by the Five
