In this summers playlab, South African poet and performer Khadija Tracey Heeger
teams up with musicians from Western Massachusetts to create a new soundscape,
performed live with spoken word. Khadija speaks with words as smooth and
soothing as a water-sculpted river stone and with words as hard as stones thrown
in anger. Her words resonate with the earth against a sound-tapestry of
indigenous and original live music. Her poems fearlessly question her identity
and the complexities of living in her skin, in the New South Africa, and in the
world. Stone Words gives us a remarkable lens through which to see our country,
our time and, ultimately, ourselves.
In this our New South Africa
one is hard pressed to find anyone that has been
or is racist, or supported in any way, shape or form the Apartheid regime.
This
phenomenon, this disappearing act, a magicians dream, is disturbing, since
progress remains, through this mutation, out of reach. ... Truth and
reconciliation is not a commission, it is a mission to uncover.
~ Khadija
Heeger
