THE PERFORMANCE PROJECT ANNOUNCES FIRST GENERATION, OUR NEW INTENSIVE ARTS AND
YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INNITIATIVE TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 2008!

FIRST GENERATION

First Generation is an intensive arts-based, community building, and
leadership development program for first generation youth that provides a
platform for youth to have a public voice in their community and beyond.

Beginning in September 2008 a group of 12 young people, ages 15-22,
who self-identify as "first generation" will come together for a year-long process
of research, self-reflection, artistic training, and dialogue to create a full-length
multi-lingual performance about the experience of being first generation.
Priority will be given to youth who are multi-lingual and/or court-involved.
Community Elders will also participate in the creative process
by sharing their experiences and perspectives.

First Generation is based on the belief that the cultural legacies
and family histories of first generation youth are a source of strength
as we shape our individual identities. The program's focus on creating a
multi-lingual performance invites First Generation participants to
embrace individual complexities within their family, and community cultures and
provides a platform for young people to have a public voice within the community.
Ensemble members will invite audiences to participate in a public dialogue about
how systemic oppression severs youth from their cultural origins.
