[Antiracism] TRIGGERING CHANGE CONFERENCE ~ April 25 - 26,

We would like to get some information on being part of this conference
next year. 

 

LIFEbeat is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to reaching
America's youth with the message of HIV/AIDS prevention.  Recognizing
that music has always played a significant role in the lives of young
people, LIFEbeat mobilizes the talents and resources of the music
industry to raise awareness and to provide support to the AIDS
community. 

2008 marks the 27th anniversary of the start of the AIDS epidemic and
these are statistics in the USA.

*         There are approximately 1.2 million people living with
HIV/AIDS in the United States. It is estimated that a quarter of those
people don't know they have it. At least 40,000 more people are infected
each year

*         Nearly 75% of all people living with HIV/AIDS in the USA are
minorities

*         African Americans and Latinos respectively represent 50% and
20% of all new HIV infections reported annually to the Centers of
Disease Control and Prevention, though they each account for only 13% of
the total U.S. population.

*         AIDS is the leading cause of death among black women aged
25-34.

*         Among Latinos, the HIV infection rate is 3 times higher for
males, and 5 times higher for females than that of white, non-Hispanic
people in the U.S.

*         Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and Native
Americans/Alaskan Natives continue to report rising rates of HIV/AIDS
infections in their communities.

Although HIV treatment options have expanded rapidly in recent years,
there is no cure, no vaccine, people continue to die from AIDS and HIV
continues to spread at an alarming rate. A generation informed ceases to
be a generation at risk

The strongest and most powerful weapon against HIV/AIDS is awareness. It
is imperative that young people are informed about the myths and
realities surrounding HIV/AIDS. They must be equipped with the tools
needed in order to make intelligent decisions at crucial moments.
