Friends,

Adele Smith-Penniman has served for years on the AFSC and MLK Day Committees
-- as part of a life time devoted to justice and peace. Naima of Climbing
PoeTree is her daughter. This evening promises to be utterly remarkable.

>WHO IS CLIMBING POETREE?
>
>Employing art as their weapon, their medicine, their voice, and their
>vision, Alixa and Naima make up the boundary-breaking arts-activist duo
>Climbing PoeTree. With roots in Haiti and Colombia, Alixa and Naima reside
>in Brooklyn and track footprints across the country and globe on a mission
>to overcome destruction with creativity. In five self-organized spoken word
>tours, Climbing PoeTree has rocked 500 mikes and counting from from Oakland
>to Atlanta, South Africa to Cuba with artists such as Amiri Baraka, Sonia
>Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, Danny Glover, Jessica Care Moore, The Last Poets,
>and Dead Prez. They have led workshops in institutions from Cornell
>University to Riker's Island. And they have painted murals on walls from
>the Bronx to Santiago, Toronto to Jamaica. Climbing PoeTree uses art to
>expose injustice, heal from violence, and make a better future visible,
>immediate, and irresistible.

>Who is TAINA ASILI?
>
>Taína Asili carries on the tradition of her ancestors, fusing present and
>past struggles into one poetic song-voice. She is a puertorriqueña poet,
>vocalist, visual artist, mother, teacher and activist, currently living,
>teaching and performing in Albany, NY. Taína carries a fire breathing voice
>of rage and resistance featuring at open mics, festivals and political
>events across the country. She weaves resistance, anti-colonialist
>struggle, love, identity, reclamation of the body, ancestral remembrance,
>and more into a unique vocalization style infusing poetry and song.
