Immigration, the IMF and the War in Iraq: Why We Will Never Be Illegal
Sunday, October 21, 2007
Edwards Church, Northampton 7PM
This is an interactive session which seeks to put the current
immigration debate in the U.S. in the context of globalization and
war profiteering. We ask
*why are some countries more poor than others?
*why do people immigrate to the United States?
*why is the U.S. in a war in Iraq?
We then examine information about structural adjustment, domestic
immigration policy, and corporate war profiteering.
Finally, we look at case studies of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two
Spirit, and Trans people of color in all of these intersections. We
will discuss how transphobia, homophobia, and imperialism effect
lives, communities, and choices.
We will use small groups, large group exercises, and large group
discussion formats. We want participants to walk away understanding
basic definitions of globlization, structural adjustment, current
U.S. immigration policy, and war profiteering on the part of U.S.
corporations. We will also emphasize that the current immigration
policy debate can only be understood in the context of poverty and
destabilization of the global south, and the military industrial
goals of the US government and defense corporations. Finally, we will
talk about how we seek to address these issues through a
participation in a growing immigrant rights movement, which is
connected to transnational anti-globalization organizing.
The Audre Lorde Project is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit and
Transgender People of Color center for community organizing, focusing
on the New York City area. Through mobilization, education and
capacity-building, we work for community wellness and progressive
social and economic justice. Committed to struggling across
differences, we seek to responsibly reflect, represent and serve our
various communities.
