Thursday November 29
	THE LEWIS HINE PROJECT
7-9pm, Holyoke Heritage State Park Visitors Center, 221 Appleton St,
Holyoke (534-1723, www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/central/hhsp.htm).
Local author and historian Joe Manning has undertaken a project to
find and interview descendants of child laborers who were photographed by
Lewis Hine in the early 1900s. So far, he has been successful for over 30
children. In almost all cases, the descendant or descendants had no idea
that such a photo of their ancestor existed or that the ancestor was a child
laborer. Click on the photos at Joe's website,
www.morningsonmaplestreet.com/lewishine.html, to learn about his exciting
search for Addie Card; children that Hine failed to identify which Joe is
nevertheless trying to track down; the National Public Radio story about
this project; 5,000 of Hine's photos at the Library of Congress; and more.
This is an amazing project which Joe will describe, display, and
discuss at this special event sponsored by Western Mass. Jobs with Justice
with support from the Holyoke Heritage State Park.
Seating is limited. You may reserve a seat by phone or email. Info:

Friday November 30
HELP STOP HUMAN SERVICE BURN OUT!
9-10:30am, Holiday Inn, 711 Dwight Street, Springfield. You are
invited to a briefing to learn more about Service Employees (SEIU) Local
509's Campaign for Quality Human Service Campaign Services. People with
disabilities, families, providers, and human service workers all agree that
quality care at private human service agencies is compromised by high staff
turnover caused by low wages. That is why over 4,000 human service workers
at 34 agencies, members of SEIU Local 509, are uniting in a campaign to
reduce turnover and improve care.
In 2008, to address high turnover and low wages, the workers will
propose common solutions during negotiations at 34 different agencies that
serve persons with developmental disabilities or mental illness, children,
or the elderly. Join religious, community, labor, and political leaders at a
series of rallies in late November with disability rights advocates and
workers in every part of the state to explain the staffing crisis to the
community. RSVP: 800-632-8079 x0. Info: Cliff Cohn,

Monday December 10
49th ANNIVERSARY OF UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS -
http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html
Vigil and speak-out, 4pm, Greenfield Town Common. In the words of
the UN General Assembly, respect for human rights and human dignity "is the
foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world." We all know the
extent to which the basic human rights and needs of the vast majority of
people in this world, women in particular, continue to be denied by those
representing and defending the power structures of global capitalism. So
please join us to reaffirm the value and importance of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights by making a declaration of our own: a pledge to
continue the on-going struggle for a society organized for people, not
profit - for caring, not killing. Info: Susan Dorazio, Connecticut Valley
Coalition for Women's Lives, 367-9356, mailto:susandor at crocker.com.

Wednesday December 12
PIONEER VALLEY COALITION TO CHANGE & CHALLENGE WAL-MART
7pm, Converse Hall Room 209, Amherst College, Rt 116 at Rt 9,
Amherst. Agenda includes: Status of Hadley and Greenfield site-fights;
Wake-Up Wal-Mart holiday actions; StopSprawlMart.org; "Relocalization" and
Buy Local campaigns. Note: Hadley Planning Board November 20 approved a
subdivision plan that exempts a planned 200,000-square-foot Wal-Mart
Supercenter from the current bylaw restriction of 75,000 square feet.
Developers now have eight-years to get a site plan approved before the
exemption expires. The board will review the site plan in January.
