Dear Sisters & Brothers,
As a subscriber to our [Workers' Rights] e-list, you know the Jobs with
Justice campaign for workers' rights from the inside. We are writing to ask
for your financial support of Western Massachusetts Jobs with Justice.
If you've been involved in WMJwJ long enough, you remember the heightened
excitement and solidarity when we employed paid staff. Well, beginning May
2007, WMJwJ once again hired a staffer, a "half-time" Coordinator – Jon
Weissman, long-time JwJ activist and former President of the National
Association of Letter Carriers Branch 46. With financial help from people
like you and the Organizational Members, WMJwJ is again contributing to the
pool of local organizers while building the Coalition as a solid form of
solidarity.
With a staffer, and with great co-operation from the Pioneer Valley AFL-CIO
where Jon is also the half-time staffer, WMJwJ has been in the thick of
local struggles for workers’ rights – giving Members a lot of opportunities
to fulfill their "I’ll Be There" pledge – by
<> confronting Big Y over sales of Smithfield pork from its massive Tar
Heel NC sweatshop, and rallying new folks to the cause, like the Springfield
City Council;
<> joining the statewide steering committee of the Coalition to Protect
Massachusetts Patients, and educating and mobilizing for the Patient Safety
Act (H. 2059) which would dramatically improve hospital care;
<> building the Western Mass. Single-Payer Network in the struggle to
reform healthcare financing once and for all;
<> supporting the Alliance to Develop Power (ADP) Worker Center/Casa Obrera
and the Western Mass Coalition for Immigrant & Worker Rights;
<> mobilizing against union-busting at Channel 40; for fair labor contracts
at UMass Amherst, North Adams Regional Hospital, statewide building
services, and ServiceNet; against the Peru Free Trade Agreement; for keeping
the Baystate VNA/Hospice and the Verizon call center open in Greenfield;
against abuse after abuse by Wal-Mart; for fair construction contracting by
Smith College; and much more.
But we intend to grow the staffer job to full-time. Your (tax deductible)
donation now is a critical part of our fundraising strategy. Please use the
form below to add your support to ours. Thank you!
In solidarity,
John Bennett ... Rick Brown ... Maureen Carney ... Jo Comerford ... John
Fitzgerald ... Joan Grenier ... Irene Kimball ... Roberta Mulcahy SSJ ...
Ron Patenaude ... Diane Scherrer ... Carlos Vega
