Dear friends,

I am writing on behalf of Luís Alfonso Meléndez, former Producer and Host of WFCR's Tertulia.

He is now coordinating an effort for Vieques, Puerto Rico to apply for a radio license. (Please see Luis's note below for more details.)

The radio station will be a community-based, educational, non-commercial station like Valley Free Radio (Northampton), but will be full power like WFCR (Amherst).

He is in the process of doing fundraising, so the group can apply for the license. He needs $15,000.00 by the end of this month (August 2007).

The group is very pleased to have already received $5,000.00 from the Media Justice Fund.

If you are able to donate to this important project, the details are below. If you have any advice or leads to other funding sources, besides the Media Justice Fund, please contact Luis Alfonso at: <luisalfonso.melendez at gmail.com>.

To understand why this is a unique opportunity to have a public radio station, please read the following article by Amy Goodman:

Message from Luís Alfonso Meléndez:

You may have seen my recent emails regarding

RADIO COMUNITARIA VIEQUES FM.

I am writing to you from Vieques, a small island municipality in
Puerto Rico, which was used by the US Navy for bombing practices and military testing for more than 60 years.

The military maneuvers ended after a massive, peaceful civil
disobedience movement organized by El Comité Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques (CPRDV) in 2003. But there is still a lot to be done to assure the appropriate decontamination of the land, the return of the land to the people of Vieques and a sustainable model of development in the hands of the community.

Now, the CPRDV has asked me to coordinate the application process for a radio license (please see Full Throttle attachment). As you can
imagine, I am delighted to be working on this project.

Our immediate goal is to raise approximately $15,000 for legal and
technical expenses.

I hope you will be able to make a TAX DEDUCTIBLE contribution to this important project by either making a electronic transfer or sending a check to the CPRDV account by mail:
