WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON: UNCOMPOMISING CHAMPION OF FREEDOM
Horace Seldon of the Boston African American National Historic Site

April 21, 2007, 2:00 p.m.
Florence Civic Center (next to Lilly Library)

Sponsored by the The Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue Committee, The Sophia Smith Collection, Boston African American National Historic Site, the Western Mass. American Friends Service Committee, and the Beacon Hill Scholars.

William Lloyd Garrison’s immediatist abolitionism was central to the thinking of the founders of the Northampton Association of Education and Industry. Garrison’s brother-in-law, George W. Benson, co-founded the NAEI in April of 1842.

Horace Seldon, creator of the Liberator Files website, founder of Community Change, Inc., and now National Park Ranger at the Boston African American National Historic will share some observations about Garrison as an uncompromising radical abolitionist.

Beverly Hector-Smith, great-great granddaughter of fugitive slave, abolitionist and former Florence resident Thomas H. Jones, will be joining Horace along with other members of the Beacon Hill Scholars.

Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to explore the connections between Florence and Boston in the 1840’s and 50’s when Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Wendell Phillips and others worked the speaking circuit and found refuge at the Community of the NAEI.

$7 suggested donation, $10 with either of the Walking Tours below.

WALKING TOURS OF HISTORIC AFRICAN AMERICAN AND ABOLITIONIST FLORENCE

9:00 & 11:00 a.m. from the Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue

Steve Strimer will lead the mile-and-a-half walk to the numerous sites still existing in Florence that date from the time of Sojourner Truth, Lydia Maria Child, David Ruggles, and Thomas H. Jones all of whom lived here. We will see two sites nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. If raining one “indoor walking tour” will take place at the Florence Civic Center (next to Lilly Library) at 11:00 a.m.

Suggested donation $5, $10 if attending the Garrison event in the afternoon.

Donations to both events benefit the Sojourner Truth Memorial Scholarship Fund. For more information, call 587-0743.
