If you have never called your Senators before, now is the time to start. If you have, now is the time to do it again, AND TELL A FRIEND!
ACT NOW TO SAVE LIVES, SAVE FREEDOM.
FILIBUSTER SENATE BILL 3901 WHICH WILL LEGALIZE TORTURE!
>From Nancy Foster, supported by the New York Times editorial page.
It's not too late to call our Senators urging them to filibuster so-called "compromise" legislation which they have been debating today (Wednesday) and will in all probability try to bring to a vote tomorrow or Friday. This legislation would deny "habeas corpus" rights to detainees at Guantanamo and would let judges at the military tribunals decide case by case whether or not to accept evidence extracted through torture!
Other aspects of the legislation would let the President decide what constitutes a "grave" violation of Common Article Three of the Geneva Conventions! Less severe methods of torture will then be "acceptable". In any case this legislation would immunize the President and the CIA from prosecution for past or future violations of the Conventions!
This appalling legislation will come to a vote in the Senate tomorrow or Friday if no one attempts a filibuster. Many thanks if you have already called. If not, call as soon as you can and urge our Senators to support a filibuster! Here are office numbers in Washington, DC:
Senator Edward Kennedy (202) 224-4543 Senator John Kerry (202) 224-2742
The House of Representatives does not allow filibustering but House members can be urged to support Senate colleagues in a filibuster in the upper chamber.- and at least to vote against House bills containing these appalling provisions.
Representative Richard Neal (202) 225-5601 Representative John Olver (202) 225-5335
Yesterday I joined other folks from the Pioneer Valley Coalition Against Secrecy and Torture in visits to the offices of Rep. Olver in Holyoke and of Rep. Neal and Sen. Kerry in Springfield where we delivered copies of a thousand signatures on petitions against torture. Then we vigiled in front of the Federal Building. The coalition held another vigil in Northampton this evening.
