Dear All,
Lenelle Moise is a self-identified "culturally hyphenated pomosexual
poet." She is also a wonderful playwright and performance artist.
Best,
Krysia

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me?
Poets know: that cliche is a cup of crap! Words can shoot from a soft
mouth bullet-mean and rock-hard. Words can shatter hearts, teeth, and
other bones...
Once, a tired student (too irritated to be challenged), mouthed off to
one of my favorite acting teachers, Susannah Barryman. Susannah simply
raised her eyebrows, took a minute to realign her spine and projected
her voice to fill the classroom. "I want everyone to pick a partner and
sit down," she said. "Look that person in the left eye and just breathe
together." After five minutes of shrugging giggles and awkward
inhalations and exhalations she instructed, "Continue to look your
partner in the eye. I want you to take turns. I want you to tell your
person, 'I have the power to HURT you.'" My partner and I both
hesitated, then shivered as we recited the phrase, five
times each. "Now," Susannah continued, "say 'I have the power to HELP
you.'"
That exercise changed my life! It also changed the dynamic in the
classroom. Once we articulated our knowledge of the power to hurt or to
help, we knew that every praise or curse we made from then on wasn't a
fluke, but a choice. Words can rouse WORLDS. We can pronounce ourselves
into oblivion or we can prophet into existence a planet abundant with
love...
I know I'm a boho-hippie-homo...but it's true.

OCTOBER READS!
This Fall, my writing is featured in THREE new anthologies!
1. WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER WAVE: DISPATCHES FROM THE NEXT GENERATION OF
FEMINISTS (Seal Press). Edited by the very cool Melody Berger (also the
editor-at-large of the F-Word Zine). The anthology features good writing
by some of my favorite writerly people on the planet: Maria Cristina
Rangel, Staceyann Chin and Elena Azzoni. My confessional essay "Rice
Tight with Beans: Loving Caribbean Skin" is all about the trials and
triumphs of being in an interracial lesbian relationship. Support your
local bookstore OR pre-order a copy of the book at:

2. BRASSAGE: AN ANTHOLOGY OF POEMS BY HAITIAN WOMEN (a joint publication
of the Multicultural Women's Press and the UCSB Center for Black
Studies). Edited by Claudine Michel, Marlene Racine-Toussaint and
Florence Bellande-Robertson with a forward by Chryss Yost.
3. I'm really proud of the characters I created a couple of years ago
for We Got Issues! a multi-genre project about young women and
leadership. Now you can read excerpts of those poems/monologues
(and more) in WE GOT ISSUES: A YOUNG WOMAN'S GUIDE TO A BOLD, COURAGEOUS
AND EMPOWERED LIFE (Inner Ocean Press). Edited by Rha Goddess and J-Love
Calderon.

We Got Issues! performance piece is also on tour in the Southwest and
Northeast. I conducted a couple of intensive acting workshops with the
cast this year. Check these fierce women out: www.wegotissues.org

ALSO
Did you know I'm the new book reviewer for Velvetpark Magazine?! Pick up
a copy of the Summer 2006 Issue (#1) and you can read about more good
reads. www.velvetparkmagazine.com <http://www.velvetparkmagazine.com/>.
There's also a wonderful article about the June Millington & Ann Hackler
of the Institute for the Musical Arts (www.ima.org <http://www.ima.org/>
- June is producing MADIVINEZ, my upcoming spoken word CD). You might
recognize the lanky, laughing poet on the right in really sweet photo
spread that compliments the article
GOOD NEWS!
I was awarded a Sea Change Residency from the Gaea Foundation
(http://www.gaeafoundation.org <http://www.gaeafoundation.org/>) and
will be living in P-town, MA for two months to work on my new play,
ECLIPSE. It's a murky comedy about academia, class, creativity and
Vodou. I'm too shy to say more, but I'll keep you posted!
CD NEWS!
COMING VERY SOON! We're in the final mastering stages at the IMA
studio. 2007 y'all: DON'T SLEEP.
Words Rouse Worlds, Lenelle.

All things in nature grow best under restraint. The human
birth process. A young plant pushing through the soil. A
tree growing struggles against gravity and weather. Great
songs, great art, great preaching comes from great struggle.
