>From 'sweet spot' to sore spot...

This October 27-28th, join students and young people across the country in
standing with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) to end sweatshops and
modern-day slavery in the fields!

WIth strong student and youth support, the CIW – a grassroots organization
of mostly Latino, Haitian, and Mayan Indian low-wage immigrant workers based
in Southwest Florida – won its four-year boycott of Taco Bell in 2005. Now
the CIW and its allies are organizing to extend these precedent-setting
gains throughout the rest of the fast-food industry. Over the last year,
however, McDonald's has consistently responded to the dire human rights
crisis in the fields as a mere public relations crisis, threatening to roll
back the advances the CIW has won through years of struggle.

Immediately following the CIW's McDonald's Mini-Tour – which will travel
from Immokalee, Florida to McDonald's headquarters outside Chicago, Illinois
from October 14-24th – the Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA) calls for two
days of widespread, decentralized protest actions on October 27-28th to show
the fast-food giant that Immokalee's workers are not alone in this fight.

The time is now for students and youth – what McDonald's calls its
advertising "sweet spot" – to demonstrate to the Golden Arches that if it
refuses to work with the CIW for real labor reform in its supply chain, we
will soon become its sore spot. Start organizing today in your community for
the Days of Action, and don't miss out on this pivotal "1-2 Punch!"

Let us know what you're planning, and be sure to send us photos of your
colorful, creative actions! Contact us at organize at sfalliance.org

*:: Action Ideas ::*
Organize a McDonald's protest - For Oct. 27-28th, organize creative actions
calling on McDonald's to work with the CIW for real labor reform in its
supply chain. From a protest at a nearby Golden Arches to a visit to a
McDonald's corporate or franchise office, there are many ways you can take
action locally. You can download flyers, stencils, and protest chant sheets
at www.sfalliance.org/propaganda.html. For some inspiration, check out the
pics from the 2006 "Real Rights Tour" at
www.ciw-online.org/2006truthtour/dailyupdates.html

Fair Food Networks - Across the country, students, youth, people of faith,
labor, and community groups are coming together to stand in solidarity with
the CIW. The Alliance for Fair Food (www.allianceforfairfood.org) and our
recent work in the Denver area (www.ciw-online.org/Denver_2006.html) provide
living examples of how to build a local Fair Food Network in your
community. The October 27-28th Days of Action can be a great opportunity to
begin pulling together such a dynamic network in your own community.

McDonald's Manager Letter - Organize a local "Human Rights Delegation" of
your friends or classmates to drop a letter off at one or several
McDonald's. This is a quick and effective way to let McDonald's
decision-makers know how widespread the support is for the CIW's campaign
Download the letter in English or Spanish at
www.sfalliance.org/propaganda.html

C + C = C - Underlying the CIW's organizing philosophy is the motto:
"Consciousness + Commitment = Change." One important action you can do
leading up to or on the Days of Action to create consciousness in your
community is hosting a film screening and campaign presentation. Contact us
for a free DVD featuring several short documentaries on the CIW plus
guidelines and pointers for effectively giving presentations about the
campaign in your classrooms and community centers.

Support the Postcard Campaign - Gather signatures for the McDonald's
postcard campaign and send them to corporate headquarters in Oak Brook,
Illinois. Contact us for your free stack of postcards.

Be the Media - Unlike McDonald's, we don't have a billion dollar marketing
budget, so help us spread the word by writing an article or op-ed for your
local campus or city newspaper or independent media center leading up to and
on the Days of Action. We also have a 30-second Radio PSA (
www.sfalliance.org/resources/mcd-psa.mp3) that you can download and get in
rotation at your local campus or community radio station. Contact us for
support & resources for your press work.

Chipotle - CIW allies in the Denver area or allies with Chipotle restaurants
nearby encouraged to protest or flyer at their local Chipotle location. If
you can link up a Chipotle and McDonald's protest, that's even better.
Contact us for Chipotle postcards, and download the Chipotle flyer here:
www.sfalliance.org/propaganda.html . For more information on how the
Chipotle piece fits into the fair food puzzle, visit
