WE ARE TALKING TO NEW HAMPSHIRE VOTERS NOW – JOIN US!

May 6, 2006

Friends of Swing the Vote,

Do you like what Congress has been doing – on the war, budget
priorities, the Patriot Act? Do you like what Congress has not been
doing -- with its silence or inaction on torture, global warming,
alternative energy development, universal affordable healthcare,
affordable housing, sustainable economic development, accessible
college education. . . the endless list of unaddressed needs and
priorities for our nation?

Right now, the system of checks and balances has completely broken
down. And despite unprecedented cuts in spending on human needs,
military spending is so high that, as reported by USA Today (4/3/06),
“[f]ederal spending is [now] outstripping economic growth at a rate
unseen in more than half a century…. the most rapid growth during one
administration since Franklin Roosevelt, who served 1933-45, during
the Depression and World War II.” The same article quotes Republican
Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona: “’When you're in control of the
presidency and both houses of Congress, there's just no stop on
it.’” (emphasis added)

The country is being bankrupted, bled, and morally degraded. There’s
still time to change this, but the hour is getting very, very late.

Swing the Vote has geared up to help the national effort to switch
the 15 seats in the House of Representatives needed to end the
Republican lock on Congress in the November 2006 mid-term elections.
Our part in the coming battle: Doing our best to defeat one of NH’s
two pro-war Republican representatives, Charlie Bass, in the 2nd
Congressional District (the District that includes Keene, Cheshire
County and the whole western half of the state).

NOW HERE’S THE REALLY IMPORTANT PART: We have to reach tens of
thousands of voters in the Second Congressional District of New
Hampshire before November 7th to help end the right-wing Republican
domination of Congress and our government, and we have only six
months left to do it. WE NEED YOUR HELP STARTING NOW! We especially
need your help with door-to-door canvassing, calling voters, and
staffing literature tables to find more volunteers.

event coordinators, or call 866-543-VOTE (8683), or email

Why New Hampshire?

New Hampshire, with its first-in-the-nation presidential primary, has
a huge influence on choosing the candidate and setting the terms of
the debate on our nation’s future direction. If we want to see a
truly progressive Democratic presidential candidate in 2008, if we
want to push the debate towards ending the war and creating real
national security based on peace, international cooperation, and
meeting human needs, New Hampshire is the place to work.

Our 2006 congressional campaign against Bass, important in itself, is
also an integral part of our work toward 2008. In our effort to
defeat Bass, we are addressing the same issues which must be
addressed in the presidential primary and election: peace, justice,
real national security. To achieve our goals now and in 2008,
candidates must be met at every turn with hard questions: about
ending the war and occupation of Iraq; rejecting the policy of
permanent war; creating real security. These issues are already on
the minds of many NH voters. Between now and the 2008 election, our
job is to talk to as many of these voters - and their neighbors - as
we can.

This is what Swing the Vote does best. In door-to-door canvasses, at
literature tables, and in phone canvasses, we talk to people one-to-
one, ask them what their priorities and concerns are, and pass on our
trademark flyers – fact-based and well documented. Join us!

We start weekly door-to-door canvassing on May 14. We have weekly
lit tables, and make calls to voters most weeks. See below for details.

Hope to see you at some of these events!

With hope for a brighter future,
Leah Brown, for the Steering Committee
