The Center for Popular Economics invites you to a panel on:
Real World Economic Alternatives: Stepping Stones to 'Another World'
Sunday, July 23, 7:00-9:00, Amherst College, Fayerweather Hall
SPEAKERS
"America Beyond Capitalism," Gar Alperovitz (National Center for Economic and Security Alternatives)
Every great empire falls; all systems change. People seriously concerned with peace, democracy, equality, liberty and ecological sustainability need to stand back and understand that pessimism is the drug of those who oppose change; that radical change often emerges seemingly unexpectedly, out of dark eras of pain; that a new political economic vision which democratizes the ownership of capital in ways different from both corporate capitalism and state socialism is needed; and that there are things which can be done, now - all over the country - to further the practical basis of such a vision, communicate it to fellow Americans - and, simultaneously, to begin to debate its ultimate long term theoretical form.
"Create Your Own Economy Now! A Global Vision for Local Communities,"
Julie Graham, (CPE staff economist, local economic activist and author of The End of Capitalism, and A Postcapitalist Politics)
Is the economy 'capitalist'? What might it mean to think of economic identity in different ways? We normally define the economy in terms of the capitalist market-based economy. This is like looking at the tip of an iceberg. Below the water line are many sites and activities which produce and transact values, goods and services.
"Venezuela and the 'Socialism of the New Century': Lessons for the U.S. Left"
Rene Poitevin, (NYU Professor, activist and low-income housing organizer)
Venezuela and it's President Hugo Chavez has become a symbol of resistance against the injustices and inequities of global capitalism. It has also become an inspiration to those who believe that, in the slogan of the World Social Forum, 'Another World Is Possible.'
This event is part of the Center for Popular Economics' Summer Institute, a week long program to demystify the economy, bringing together activists and others from around the country and world. For a full schedule of workshops and panels see CPE's web-site at: www.populareconomics.org
