Energy Use In Our Everyday Lives

An Independent Bilingual Radio Project for
Western Massachusetts

A Public Education and Community Action Project
Toward More Sustainable Energy Use in our Personal Lives

Project Description: A four-part series of bilingual (Spanish/English) educational radio programs on energy conservation & alternatives as they relate to everyday use; namely, home energy use, food consumption, and transportation. It speaks to the general public on how to conserve natural resources, protect the environment/human health (i.e. reducing pollution and global warming), and help cut fuel costs. The focus is on reducing consumption of fossil fuels via conservation, energy-efficiency and the use of local, cleaner energy alternatives like local agriculture, solar, wind, and biodiesel.

In addition to giving practical suggestions on how to reduce energy bills, we will highlight individual success stories and local community resources by interviewing guests on our show.

The program will be broadcast on local community radio stations: like the Spanish-language Tertulia program of WFCR-- 88.5 FM news and music for Western New England; WMUA at the University of Massachusetts; WXOJ, Low Power FM in Northampton and other community radio stations in Western Massachusetts. It will be a total of eight 15-minute programs : four in English and four in Spanish.

Audience: The general public in the Western Massachusetts radio listening area, including the Spanish-speaking Latino community.

The series will air during the Fall of 2006.

 Goals/Objectives:

  1. Present facts and statistics about the present energy situation
 2. Help link the general public with local resources oriented toward sustainable energy use

  3. Offer conservation tips as a way to reduce energy consumption and costs
 4. Educate & motivate the public by giving hopeful information and success stories
 5. Encourage the residents of Hampden, Franklin, and Hampshire counties to better use local energy resources
 6. Address interconnections between personal energy use and the environment, human health, global equity and economic & social justice
 7. Decrease greenhouse gas emissions and
 8. Celebrate and promote existing community resources.
