Hello,

My name is Amanda and I am the president of the Black Student
Union here at the UMass. I was writing to inform and invite you to an event
that we are co-sponsoring with the Pride Alliance, African Student
Association,
SGA programming board, Student Affairs, CSD, and Arts Council. It takes
place
this Saturday February 25th in Bowker Auditorium at 7:00pm. It's called The
Fight Apathy tour and features poets and spoken word artists that have been
featured on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam.

This tour is a music and poetry production aimed at igniting a social
consciousness surrounding issues of race, gender and sexuality through the
lens
of HIV/AIDS. We would truly appreciate your support and attendance at this
show
as we think it is going to be a great catalyst to activism on campus and
hopefully serve as an entertaining and educational opportunity for students
and
the community alike. The best part about it is that it is FREE! If you have
any
questions or would like more information please do not hesitate to contact
me
or visit fightapathy.org.

Please pass this event information on to your students, groups, departments,
or
anyone that you think may be interested. Thank you and hope to see you
there...

Regards,
Amanda A. Butler-Jones

Five artists combine their talents to present a socially conscious,

emotionally charged evening on how HIV/AIDS and the issues intrinsic to the
pandemic affect individual students, their community, country and world.

Acoustic melodies and jazz-inflected vocals weave seamlessly with
emotionally
pure poetry to change the way people view the HIV/AIDS epidemic and create
an
environment where students feel comfortable talking about HIV/AIDS and the
surrounding topics- sex, race, gender, drug use, poverty, stigma and
prevention
methods.

What are people saying about NYC SIA and the Fight Apathy Tour?

- Timothy McClain, Assistant Director of Campus Activities, St. John’s
