*THREE DAYS OF FASTING -- Remembering Chernobyl*

Wells Fountain, Main St, Brattleboro, VT, (in front of the District
Court House) &
six miles from the Vermont Yankee reactor

Tuesday April 25 &
Wednesday April 26 &
Thursday April 27
10 am - 4 pm

Begining April 25, people will engage in a 3-day fast to commemorate
the Chernobyl nuclear reactor's cataclysmic accident on April 26,
1986; the group of fasters is calling for shutting down Vermont
Yankee and replacing it with safe and sustainable energy.

This is the twentieth anniversary of the catastrophic accident at the
Chernobyl reactor in the Ukraine, Russia. Due to human error, the #4
reactor exploded releasing over 400 times more radioactivity than was
released at Hiroshima. The initial explosion returned to earth as
radioactive rain. The destroyed hulk burned for ten days,
contaminating tens of thousands of square miles and forced a million
people from their homes.

Health and clean-up costs from the accident are estimated to cost
hundreds of billions of dollars and have still not been completed.
Many thousands of contaminated square miles are still uninhabitable.
The radioactive remains of #4 reactor continues to smolder beneath
the sarcophagus, a decaying concrete-and steel-crypt that now
threatens to collapse. Within this decaying shelter an estimated 200
tons of nuclear fuel remain and continue to threaten the surrounding
environment with dangerous levels of radioactive contaminants
entering the air and water.

"This nuclear nightmare created by simple human error stands as a
warning. There is no remedy for this accident. There is no way to
prevent human error. And there is no safe way to store high level
radioactive waste for tens of thousands of years," said Hattie Nestel.
"For these reasons I advocate closing Vermont Yankee, a 34 yr old
dangerous reactor threatening the health and safety of all New
England. In its place I envision communities developing conservation
to decrease our energy needs and local, clean, affordable, safe and
sustainable energy. I am initiating a three-day, water only fast.
On April 25, 26 and 27 from 10am until 4pm I will be in front of the
Wells Fountain on Main St. in Brattleboro, which is less than 6 miles
from the Vermont Yankee reactor and I invite everyone to join me."

Sincerely, Hattie Nestel, Athol, MA

"We don't have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is
an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human
beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is
itself a marvelous victory." ................. Howard Zinn
