*Film Screening, Discussion and update on the Coalition of Immokalee Workers*
The CIW is a grassroots, worker-led community organization of mainly
Latino, Haitian and Mayan migrant workers in southwest Florida.
Workers with the CIW have been organizing for over a decade to address
the subpoverty wages, abysmal working conditions, and (in extreme
cases) conditions of modern-day slavery they face to pick our fruits
and vegetables.
This event is being organized in solidarity with the CIW's 2006
"McDonald's Truth Tour"
(http://www.ciw-online.org/2006truthtour/dailyupdates.html)
and will feature:
*An Emmy-nominated 15-minute documentary by the PBS program "NOW" on
the CIW's history and victory in the Taco Bell boycott;
* El Silencio y La Palabra (The Silence and the Word): A bilingual,
behind-the-scenes look at the strength of the word, organization, and
commitment of a farmworker community from the swamps of southwest
Florida;
*A special guest appearance by none other than The Clown himself,
Ronald McDonald;
*Update from this weekend's major demonstrations by the CIW and allies
against McDonald's in Chicago.
