With crowd estimates in DC ranging from 100,000 to 300,000, it's time to
take
THE NEXT STEP FORWARD AFTER SEPTEMBER 24
---------------------------------------------------------------
A CALL FOR A NATIONWIDE STRIKE AGAINST POVERTY, RACISM AND WAR
---------------------------------------------------------------
WE MUST TURN OUR OUTRAGE OVER KATRINA INTO A STRONG & EFFECTIVE MASS
MOVEMENT
The Outrage in New Orleans is a clarion call to all anti-war and grassroots
groups in the United States. The time has arrived to broaden our struggle
and take it to a higher level, one that vividly underscores the connections
between poverty, racism and war.
Let's work together this year to organize a Nationwide Strike Against
Poverty, Racism and War on December 1st, the 50th anniversary of the day
Rosa Parks helped launch the modern civil rights movement.
= The Past As Prologue =
Fifty years ago, Black people in Montgomery, Alabama were forced by law to
sit in the back of public buses, and give their seats to any white person
who demanded it. When Rosa Parks, a garment worker and civil rights
activist, refused to give up her seat to a white man, she sparked the
Montgomery bus boycott against segregation of public transportation, one of
the most successful and truly mass boycotts in history. This anti-racist
campaign also introduced to the world a young reverend named Martin Luther
King Jr., who became the boycott's principal public leader.
= Present Conditions Demand Mass Action =
Katrina exposed the ugly truths about class and race, poverty, war and
militarism. The war and occupation of Iraq, coupled with the Katrina
Outrage, have demonstrated the necessity of fundamental change, along with
the urgent need for a movement large and determined enough to achieve this
goal. Our demand to end the war in Iraq and to bring the the troops home now
must be backed up by the kind of mass actions that signal we mean business.
Some organizers are urging No School - No Shopping - No Work on December 1,
or planning other forms of protest.
= Stop the War Against the Poor: Join Us for a Dec. 3 March on Wall Street =
In solidarity with Katrina Survivors, nationwide protests and teach-ins are
being planned for December 1 through 3, along with a MARCH ON NYC's WALL
STREET to demand, among other things:
- The people of New Orleans and the Gulf must control the rebuilding, NOT
Bush's rich friends
- An independent investigation of the Outrage
- A job at a living wage is a human right
- Healthcare, housing and education, not war and occupation
- Bring the troops home now
