Hi
There are some superb lectures, open to the public, being sponsored
this summer by the Smith College School for Social Work. Note them on
your calendars!
1. June 6, 2005 at 7:30pm in Wright Hall: The Legacy of Slavery:
Implications for Clinical Practice, by Mary F. Hall, Ph.D., LICSW
"This lecture highlights how the system of American slavery was
initially invented and institutionalized, how it was of seminal
importance to both the economic and social structures that
subsequently emerged and how it has been updated and reinvented into
the present. Implications of this legacy for clinical practice will
be addressed."
2. June 13, 2005 at 7:30pm in Wright Hall: Contingencies in
Black-Jewish Relations by John Bracey, Jr. and Jules Chametzky ,Ph.D.
" We will discuss historic events that have resulted in Black-Jewish
alliances as well as instances of Blacks and Jews being at
loggerheads. Racism endemic in American history and a tragic legacy
of anti-Semitism, which has infected much of world history, have both
been exacerbated by social, political and economic realities.. .The
lecture will end by exploring the possibilities for a new alliance
suggested in the anti-Bush and pro-Kerry votes of Blacks and Jews. .
."
3. June 20, 2005 at 7:30pm in Wright Hall: Trapped in a History They
Do Not Understand" by Tim Wise
"This presentation will examine the ways in which racism and racial
privilege damage the emotional, psychological, political, cultural
and economic well being o most whites, even as they provide whites
with benefits vis-a-vis people of color. . .Recognizing the
dysfunctionality to the larger society of the very system that
bestows unearned advantages upon whites is a critical step forward in
the ongoing dialogue regarding white privilege and institutional
racism."
Hope you can make at least one of these events if not all. Please send
around to those in your network.
Have a great week,
