Dear Friend and Colleague
We are beginning our season of Summer Theater!
I am writing to give you a preview of our events and ask your help in
getting the word out to the general community. If you are able to pass
this email along to friends and colleagues or to your
organization/dept. list serve, OR if you are a part of a summer event
and are willing to have a stack of our flyers or brochures at your
event, OR if you are teaching or involved in summer workshops and would
like a group of your students or colleagues to come to any of the
events, OR any other creative support – I’d love to hear from you!
So please take the time to review the season list and descriptions
below and then, if you are able to help get the word out in some
manner, please do so! if you need brochures, flyers or additional
information, email me back.
I also hope that you are able to come and see these brilliant artists
up front and personal. I am able to offer a pair of complimentary
tickets for those who book a group sale of 15 or more people. Please

NEW WORKS FOR A NEW WORLD PLAYLAB - SUMMER 2005
New Works for a New WORLD, New WORLD Theater’s multi-faceted summer
play laboratory is designed to facilitate the development of theater
works by established and emerging artists of color. Our 2005 playlab
features a summer of taiko & ritual, Spanish-language performance,
African American storytelling, dynamic youth voices and of course,
lively dialogue between artists and audiences during our featured Open
Studios.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY, JUNE 17 and 18 at 8 pm
New WORLD Theater in association with Great Leap and San Jose Taiko
presents The Triangle Project , JOURNEY OF THE DANDELION
Marking the 60th Anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
The Triangle Project: Journey of the Dandelion is an international
collaboration between three brilliant women artists of Japanese origin:
Yoko Fujimoto of KODO, PJ Hirabayashi of San Jose Taiko, and Nobuko
Miyamoto of Great Leap. This extraordinary presentation blends personal
stories, traditional Japanese folk and contemporary original music, the
rhythms of taiko drumming and dance. Performance turns to ritual as
these artists shift the winds of fear and violence and reveal the
collective power and connection of all humanity.
SATURDAY, JUNE 18
OPEN STUDIO- 12 noon (Free Event. Reservations required)
YOU CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY LOOKING AT THE COVER:
Sayings From The Life And Writings Of Junebug Jabbo Jones, The
Younger, Volume II
Here comes another episode of Junebug Jabbo Jones, African American
folk hero and infamous narrator of tales. With lots of humor and in his
own unique turn-of-phrase style, Junebug relates the story of “Po”
Tatum, nicknamed "Po" “ ‘cause he liked to eat spuds". Junebug relates
Po's story from early boyhood in Pike County, Mississippi to his last
desperate hours on earth, in a westside Chicago building. Po is a
symbol of many black young people who move from their rural, southern
homes to hard northern cities. It is a tale that in the end, presents
many thought-provoking issues to consider.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY, JUNE 24 and JUNE 25 at 8 pm
Mujeres en Ritual - FRONTERAS DESVIADAS/DEVIANT BORDERS
In this bi-national collaboration, New WORLD Theater's Artistic
Director, Andrea Assaf, and Mujeres en Ritual's Artistic Director, Dora
Arreola, team up to investigate the exploitation of women in
maquiladoras and sexual tourism in the Tijuana-San Diego region (the
most frequently crossed border in the world). A tour guide, El Chamuco,
leads us on a journey "to the other side" of sexuality, deviance and
culture. The text includes poetry created in collaboration with women
in surrounding communities. The choreography combines traditional
dances from Mexico with experimental movement. This is a bilingual
production, and includes adult themes/content.
SATURDAY, JUNE 24
OPEN STUDIO - 12 noon (Free Event. Reservations required)
A staged reading of FUR by MIGDALIA CRUZ
A post-apocalyptic tale of unrequited love, FUR is the story of
Citrona, a hirsute side-show performer … who loves Nena, an animal
trapper … who loves Michael, a pet shop owner … who loves Citrona and
keeps her in a cage. This new twist on the “beauty and the beast”
story is a Spanish translation-in-progress and is a bilingual event.
The staged reading, directed by Priscilla Page of New WORLD Theater and
the UMass/Amherst Theater Department, features Greta Purnima Sanchez as
Citrona (reprising her role from the 1997 Campo Santo production in San
Francisco) and Guillermo B. Irizarry (UMass/Amherst) as Michael.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY, JULY 8 and 9 at 8 pm
PROJECT 2050 ON THE FRONTLINES: SEX, WAR, AND LIES.
What is the connection between the "War on Terror" and the "War on
Drugs?" How can young people fight the global AIDS epidemic? How
reliable is the information we get from the media? This year's Project
2050 Retreat will explore the ways in which youth find themselves "on
the front lines" of a number of contemporary struggles. From military
recruitment of young people of color in public schools to homophobia
and domestic violence, the youth will explore and creatively respond to
the "war zones" they encounter at home and abroad.
Performances take place at Amherst College Holden Theater Complex.
Tickets for all events except Open Studios are: $12 for the general
public; $8-low income patrons and seniors; $5-children and students
(with current I.D.) Tickets available through the Fine Arts Center Box
Office, 413-545-2511. Playlab and Project 2050 performances are at 8
p.m. Open Studio events are free, but have very limited seating and
require advance reservations. Call 413-545-1972 for Open Studio
