Greetings Friends,

The following has information about the AFSC 2006 MLK Committee’s two-part
celebration of the life and work of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The first is an announcement about the January 16 program. The second is
an announcement about Circles, which are gatherings that will precede or
follow January 16.

This year, we encourage our community to focus both on King’s faith as a
source of strength and inspiration, and the role of faith/spirit today in
helping our community carry on Rev. King’s legacy of sustained and brave
action for justice and peace.

There has never been a more important time to connect with what inspires us
-- as individuals and as a community.

You are invited to
organize a Circle
to reflect and act on the question...

IS THERE SPACE FOR SPIRIT HERE?
moving from faith to action for social justice and peace

Read on for an opportunity to participate in - rather than simply observe
- a community celebration of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his
vision of the role of faith and action

ORGANIZE AND LEAD A CIRCLE FOR MLK DAY 2006
From January 13-16, 2006, our community will celebrate the life and work
of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, we will focus both on
King’s faith as a source of strength and inspiration, and the role of faith
today in helping our community carry on Rev. King’s legacy of brave action
for justice.

HOW WILL THIS WORK?

January 13 to 15, 2006 (or when it is most convenient for you): Circles --
small groups of friends, faith congregations, or people of shared
interests -- will meet once between January 13 and January 15 to discuss a
central query: How do our spiritual/ethical commitments require that we
take sustained, brave action toward justice?

The 2006 MLK Committee will provide a guide to convening and facilitating a
Circle which will include support material. We need circle leaders!

History says, don't hope on this side of the grave.
But then, once in a lifetime
the longed-for tidal wave
of justice can rise up,
and hope and history rhyme.
