Real Voices of Hurricane Katrina: A Town Hall Forum

 A Town Hall Meeting for Hurricane Katrina survivors and community members
who want to know more about the aftermath of the storm and assist evacuees
living in Massachusetts with their efforts at recovery will take place
Saturday, Dec. 10th from 9 am-4 pm at Roxbury Community College, 1234
Columbus Ave, Roxbury.

 

Forum participants include: Darnell Caldwell, a Katrina evacuee living in
Massachusetts, Ron Chisolm, founder of the People’s Institute of Survival &
Beyond, New Orleans; Barbara Majors, Chair of New Orleans’ Mayor Ray Nagins
Committee for Rebuilding, Cynthia Wiggins, a Louisianan public housing
advocate, and Charles Walker, the National Lawyer's Committee on Civil
Rights. 

 

Other events include: documents of true stories as told by storm survivors;
a Mardi Gras-style processional with puppets and music; workshops on: the
donation & assistance process, challenges for resources, “the right to
return,” cultural competency, legal issues, healing, spirituality, and
faith-based efforts, and a Resource Fair. Events are FREE and for the whole

The event is organized by the Coalition of the Caring led by Senator Dianne
Wilkerson, Representative Gloria Fox, and a host of concerned community
members and organizations in collaboration with the Haymarket People’s Fund.

Senator Dianne Wilkerson, Representative Gloria Fox, and Ms. Mildred Hailey 

 

9:30-11:30      Town Hall Forum 

The forum begins with evacuees (”guests”) telling their experiences of
Hurricane Katrina, its aftermath, loss and recovery, faith and strength. 

A moderated panel follows including:

§         Darnell Caldwell, Katrina Survivor

§         Ron Chisolm, People’s Institute for Survival & Beyond, New Orleans

§         Prof. Priscilla Das-Braillisford, Lesley University

§         Barbara Majors, City of New Orleans Committee on Rebuilding

§         Cynthia Wiggins, New Orleans Public Housing Advocate

§         Charles Walker, Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights

§         Moderator: Prof. Dolores Goode, Lesley University.

11:30-12:30    Lunch / Resource Fair / Meditation / Oral Documentation

Resource Fair staffed by agencies such as Roxbury Children’s Services, ABCD,
MHFA, FEMA, The Kraft Program, BHA, Mass Faith Helps, The Red Cross, Boston
Mayor’s Office, and other service providers for evacuees to gather
information and resources. 

A Meditation Room is available for quiet space and counseling assistance.

An Oral Documentation Room is staffed to record the memories of survivors.

 

12:30-2            Small Talk Circles / Workshops

Community leaders, educators, and professionals facilitate small groups that
focus on issues such as, health & healing, legal issues, cultural
competency, faith & spirituality, housing, journaling, youth & children, and
more.

 

2-3:30              Panel—Negotiating Resources: Next Steps!

Government, business, and community representatives leading the

recovery efforts discuss the complex system of donations,

assistance, volunteering, resources, and rebuilding.

 

3:30-4              Closing Ceremony w/ Processional
